- Identify and Position the Base Logs
- Different Design: The base logs differ from the rest because they lack the grooves typically found underneath.
- Match Numbers to Drawings: Refer to the manufacturing drawings to find the correct log numbers. Match them to the labels on each log to ensure proper placement.
- Set the Logs in Place
- Lightly Knock Corner Notches: Align each log at the corners, gently tapping them into position.
- Initial Alignment: This is just to set them in place—you’ll do precise leveling next.
- Square and Level the Base
- Use a String Line: Stretch a string along the edges to check for straightness.
- Check with a Spirit Level: Adjust the logs until they are perfectly level and square on all sides.
- Mark and Pre-Drill Screw Locations
- Refer to Engineering Drawings: These will show the required spacing of the screw fixings along the base row.
- Mark Each Location: Go around the perimeter and make clear marks so you know exactly where to drill and screw.
- Fix the Logs to the Floor Framing
- Start at the Corners: Secure each corner roughly 50mm from the end, as per the drawings.
- Work Around Incrementally: Move around the building, screwing in each marked location and constantly re-checking that everything remains square and level.
By taking these steps slowly and carefully, you ensure the base row is correctly installed. A perfect first row makes adding subsequent rows faster, keeps the walls true, and avoids problems down the line.
